We will be delivering this programme online, while also providing a workspace in Whanganui for you to study and collaborate alongside other students. We will also be providing local mentoring and support, as well as helping our Whanganui graduates network with the local business community and find job opportunities.
Online study with Dev Academy is a great way to learn:
  • Experience a hybrid online-campus, where you learn online but alongside other students in a physical classroom space within central Whanganui.
  • We provide daily Zoom check-ins and mindfulness practices. A typical day runs from 8:45 am through to 6 pm.
  • Engage in live pair programming, group projects, and regular interactions with teachers and fellow students, fostering a collaborative learning experience.
  • Benefit from over 30 hours of teacher contact time and live support on Discord, ensuring prompt assistance with questions and code issues.
  • Receive holistic support, including regular one-on-one check-ins with Human Skills facilitators, addressing mindset challenges and interpersonal issues.
  • Foster a sense of community, trust, and cohesion within your cohort through orientation activities, daily interactions, and connections with facilitators.
To simplify your online learning experience, we will provide a computer and desk within a local workspace
You may also like to do some of your study from home. We recommend the following set up:
  • A modern computer with minimum specifications, a stable internet connection, and headphones with a microphone to facilitate smooth communication.
  • A comfortable, well-lit, and quiet workspace, preferably with two screens, promoting uninterrupted workflow and enhanced productivity.

COURSE STRUCTURE

Foundations

Remote | 6 weeks full time

Foundations is an accelerated, challenging experience. You will study remotely, taking on weekly challenges, and having weekly check-ins with tutors. It is vital you have reliable access to the internet throughout Foundations.

Bootcamp

Learn in Whanganui alongside other students. Coursework is delivered online but in a local classroom space with Whanganui mentors & support.

9 weeks, 60 hours per week

The 9 week Bootcamp is a completely immersive experience. Expect to be busy and focused. Most students commit about 60 hours per week to lectures, assignments, challenges, and side projects.

You will be guided by teachers who are passionate about helping students master the principles of software development, and you will learn by solving coding challenges in pairs, solo and in group projects.

We know the time commitment is intense so we offer mindfulness and long lunches to combat fatigue, and we are committed to supporting your emotional and physical wellbeing.

Human Skills

Weekly deep dives and check-ins

While we train you to be a junior developer, we equally emphasise teaching collaboration and interpersonal skills. Most web development is done in teams and requires effective communication with designers, project managers, and clients.

Careers

2 weeks, after Bootcamp - 50 hours

Our careers sessions will help you develop the skills to land your first dev job and grow your career. Topics include effectively job hunting, CV preparation, and skills for interviewing. Careers sessions are recorded so graduates can review them when preparing for a big job interview. Graduates can also work 1-on-1 with an industry recruiter to help with their job seeking efforts.

Our graduates say it best

Don't just take our word for it. Dev Academy students and graduates share their stories
about the programme, getting jobs and having meaningful careers.

"As a 30-something Māori woman, I thought that a career change and learning a completely new skill like coding wasn't for me. I'd always been interested in technology and problem solving and I was looking for a challenge that I could apply my interests."

"I really appreciated the short time frame of the course I did so it wouldn't be too much of a financial burden on me. My life has been positively impacted, I am working fully remote building websites which is what I set out to do. The learnings I took away from the course were impactful with how I approach a problem."

“If I could do the course at Dev Academy all over again, I would. It was an amazing learning experience and completely changed my career.”

Courtney had a chance encounter with coding at his Customer Experience job which led to tinkering with tech in his spare time. He decided to take the plunge and change careers. A colleague recommended Dev Academy, and the rest is history.

Dev Academy set Courtney up well for his first developer role at Xero, where he continued to learn and grow before moving to a role at Re-Leased, a PropTech company based in the Hawkes Bay.

“Dev Academy opened the doors to the tech industry. I’ve been with Shopify for close to three years now and I’m grateful to be part of a company that has such a clear mission. I’m surrounded by people that inspire me, there are a ton of growth opportunities, and plenty of perks”

“Tech rewards those who are curious. It attracts people who want to know how things work and are willing to dive in to learn about them, even if they’re starting from scratch.”

"Dev Academy was easily one of the best things I’ve ever done and changed my life in ways I couldn’t predict. I walked out with confidence in my ability to learn, which is a very liberating mindset.”
